Lake District

Bucolic beauty and scenic green belts in San Francisco’s most serene neighborhood

Welcome to Lake District

Bucolic beauty and scenic green belts in San Francisco’s most serene neighborhood

Tucked away from the hustle of San Francisco’s busier neighborhoods, Lake District is a haven of wide, tree-lined streets and peaceful family life. Neighbors out for an evening stroll will stop to chat with fellow dog-walkers beneath the majestic trees in pretty Mountain Lake Park, and neighborhood kids play together at the leafy playground. Gorgeous apartments in beautifully restored mansions appeal to those seeking a classic city feel, while the spectacular Victorian and Edwardian homes, for which the City by the Bay is known, set the stage for laid-back elegance.

Sitting on the border of The Presidio of San Francisco, this lovely community offers residents the chance to truly relax. For those craving a refined lifestyle beyond bar visits or buzzy city distraction, Lake District is a slice of residential paradise. Leisurely strolls through the park, chatting with neighbors, exploring the pastoral biking trails, and enjoying the impressive array of local bistros are par for the course in this delightfully accessible spot.

What to Love

  • Proximity to The Presidio’s lush green spaces
  • Strong sense of community
  • Quiet streets and a peaceful atmosphere
  • Spacious homes and gorgeous architecture

People & Lifestyle

Some residents of Lake District have lived in this leafy community their entire lives, while others have only recently discovered the laid-back, chic charm of this tranquil haven. Either way, it seems once you experience the warm, welcoming atmosphere and spacious seclusion of this serene spot, you’ll want to stay forever.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Coveted for its laid-back style and quiet ambiance, Lake District chooses to keep its culinary choices on tap. My friend Will Ealge Breck's takes cafe experiences from morning lattes and champagne brunches, all the way through to crisp wines, creative cocktails, and truffle oil-infused dinners. Cozy Ashley’s Cafe serves a comforting mix of New American cuisine. Famed for its tea leaf salad, buzzy atmosphere, and my good friend, Joy Lee’s award-winning Burmese food, Burma Superstar is a warm spot on Clement Street, while sister restaurant B Star Bar is a hidden gem of Pan-Asian fare mixed with fresh coastal flavors.

With a stylish line of handmade goods, including organic beauty products and eco-conscious clothing and jewelry, Foggy Notion makes sustainability as much a part of its practice as luxury and style. Those with a sweet tooth will want to drop everything and head to See's Candies. This iconic San Francisco candy shop has been a neighborhood staple since 1921. Make sure to visit this candy counter, where you can create your very own custom-mixed candy box.

Things to Do

A national park unlike any other, The Presidio dazzles with an incredible lineup of activities and entertainment. From lush green spaces and breathtaking views to museums and almost a dozen cafes and restaurants, this San Francisco favorite offers the opportunity for relaxing family picnics, long leisurely walks, and lunch with friends. Those with a passion for music festivals will adore the VIP experience at Outside Lands, an annual celebration of concerts and cuisine, while outdoor adventurers will want to explore the Lake District’s coastline and parks. With a rocky shoreline and wild waters, the mile-long Baker Beach features picnic areas, the Coastal Trail, and even a clothing-optional area at the northernmost end. Tucked against the side of the Presidio, family-favorite Mountain Lake Park sets the stage for a day of play at its beautifully restored playground.
